print design, linocut carving
In anticipation of my mother’s wedding and her move from the Central Coast of California to the coast of England, I jumped at the chance to create something for her and her new husband which would capture their unique relationship.
The wedding was due to be an intimate collection of family and friends – a thoroughly handmade, even Bohemian, affair – so we knew we wanted to incorporate a stamp from the beginning. And the beach is such a force in both of their lives, so we selected a paper with a speckled, rough texture indicative of sand.
A linocut stamp in a repeating wave pattern was set in their wedding’s navy blue, and paired with an intricate title stamp – both of which produced a surprisingly tactile experience upon opening the vertical envelope and pulling out the stack of pages.
